Courting Rituals - The Difference Between Vampyres and Werewolves.

An interesting topic my children, you wish to know of the different courting rituals? Very well, we shall start with the Vampyres and then the Werewolves, both are intriguing in their own ways.

For Vampyres they have a stepping stone in every girls life refered to as the Year of the Choosing. Which comes to pass in their seventeenth year of life and concludes at the dawn of the eighteenth. Why this particular time you ask? Quite simply because by this time every female should be at her fertility peak, or just building up to it. As the centuries pass it becomes more difficult for the female Vampyres to reproduce, which is why you see so few pure blood Vampric children.

Through out this year of choosing, the seventeen year old girls are expected to attend four ‘courting’ balls, each one held three months apart. The first is always on June Thirtith, the second September Thirtith, the third December Thirty-first, and the last on March Thirty-first. As it has been done for five millennia or more. Why these dates? No one quite knows how these dates were chosen, but many believe they were chosen to represent the birth of a new season, metaphorically this translated to these dates present the most fertile times.

When a girl is chosen by a mate, he must first announce his choice to her father. If the father believe’s it to be a good match, then the two marry at the next courting ball, regardless to the daughter’s feelings on the matter. It is very rare that a girl does not get chosen by the end of her season, but in the cases inwhich this does occur the girl is disowned by her family, and thrown into the world to fend for herself. It is a creul fate as Vampyres believe that if not chosen then you are not worthy to share the family name. Many men will take pity on girls who go through most of their season with out being chosen, and will therefore choose her for themselves, whether they were looking for a mate or otherwise.

As for Werewolves, their system is much less ritualistic but still very similar, however reversed. Werewolves believe strongly in the sanctity of their blood, but understand the problems with inbreeding. As such many Werewolf clan leaders will pair their sons off with the most leader worthy women.

As the leaders of the Werewolf clans are most often female, when two clans merge, they wish the union to be of the strongest caliber. Many a young man has been forced into a pre-arranged marriage for the betterment of the Clan. Just as the Vampyre women have no say in their fates, so do the Werewolf men.

Go in peace my children, until we meet again.
