Red Light

I sit at the red light
And wait
The sun-warmed interior makes me drowsy
And dreamy
I look at the cars and think
I must know someone here

Here at the intersection
In the town where everyone
Knows everyone
Every fault, ever worry
Every item placed in your grocery cart
And it is all taken in
And ruminated over at the ball field

There are six degrees to the people here
From the sister of the mother
Of the boy who couldn’t multiply
To the dentist of the cousin whose
Sister you had in class three years ago
They are all kin of some sort or another

In the moment that the light changes
I return to focus
And realize I am staring
At a stranger
His car turns in front of me
And he smiles as I blush
And realize I am not from here at all
