Unprepared

I had seen it written years ago
That “Everything I Needed for Life I Learned Kindergarten”
They never prepared me for this.

Fighting children, messy rooms
Phone calls from principles
blaming parents for broken rules.

Calling police, assaults on teachers
Vandalism, Spanish curse words;
picking my kid up from juvenile hall.

Social workers blaming the parents, while
they never follow through, and then
shake their pointed fingers and swollen heads at you.

Peer groups and curse words
that are funny in school
until the teacher overhears; another broken rule.

Parenting was never covered
Neither was criticism, or being suspended
for the rule that was broken; after it was the teacher who bent it.

Nope, none of these things were covered
in kindergarten, or any other school
Unless I was absent that day.

Perhaps that was discussed
during a trip to the bathroom;
and I was not informed during the test review.

Who knew the exam would come so late?
Given all these years after I left
Where’s the milk and cookies?
I want my nap time, NOW!

Artist's Description

This was inspired by the “Everything I Needed in Life I Learned in Kindergarten” poem and how unprepared I was for my daughter’s teen-aged rebellion.
