Artist's Description

We were driving down the hill to our home here in Southeast Missouri when we saw this large turtle (its shell is approximately 12 inches long and 10 wide) traveling down hill in the grass beside our drive way. I am sure it was headed to our lake since it has been very dry here in Missouri and the lake were it was probably has about dried up. They are known to travel long distances to move from one body of water to another and they prefer the still waters of a lake.

  • I saw one long ago that was so large that a five year old boy was standing on its back while it was walking!!*

Click Show Full Description for a close up of its face, you can see that its bottom lip is split probably from a battle with another snapper.

The largest one of these recorded was 75 pounds and they can live nearly 50 years. They are very aggressive when on land and will attack any thing which gets to close to them. They are also very strong and very fast so you so not want to try to handle one of them. They can be easily distinguished from the Alligator Snapping Turtle because the Alligator Snapper has large knobs all over its shell. I saw one long ago that was so large that a five year old boy was standing on its back while it was walking!!
