Note: All images in this series may be found in the Wall Art collection on our page.

Cape Girardeau Missouri, USA sits on the Mississippi River in Southeast Missouri. There is a long concrete flood wall all along the down town area, between the river and the town. It has gates that can be closed during floods to protect the buildings along the river front.

Painted on the south end of the Mississippi River Flood Wall at Cape Girardeau are larger than life size character images of famous people from Missouri. This 500 foot long by 15 foot tall wall mural depicts 45 famous individuals who were born in Missouri or achieved fame while living in the state.

This section of the wall is composed of three images joined in Photoshop.

Samuel Clemens (1835 – 1910) who wrote under the pseudonym Mark Twain, was born in Florida Missouri. His stories about Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn and friends reflected his love for his boyhood hometown of Hannibal, Missouri. Unconventional in both his life and in his writing, he wrote with an ironic wit and tackled controversial issues of his day, including the evils of slavery.

This panel sponsored by William J. Chamberlain Family. The world became acquainted with American literature and the Mississippi river in Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. Two of his famous quotes are “The Mississippi River will always have its own way; no engineering skill can persuade it to do other wise,” and “I am a border ruffian from the State of Missouri. In me you have Missouri morals.”

Gen. Omar Bradley (1893 – 1981) was born in Clark, Missouri. Known as “the soldier’s general” during WWII, he commanded the largest American force ever united under one man’s leadership. His military career extended over 38 years, during which he attained the title of Chairman of the Join Chiefs of Staff.

Gen. John J Pershing (1860 – 1948) also called “Black Jack,” was born in LaClede Missouri near St. Louis. Over a 38 year military career, he earned the rand of General of the Armies. Only George Washington in US history attained the same rank. In WWI General Pershing developed advanced mobile warfare techniques, which the American Expeditionary Force employed under his command.

The panel is sponsored The Narvol and Dorothy Randol Family

George Caleb Bingham (1811 – 1879) was born in Augusta County, Virginia. He later moved to Missouri and served in the Missouri Legislature as state treasurer and adjutant general. His fame came from his portraits and paintings of live on the Missouri frontier.
