Artist's Description

A small Night Heron (likely a Yellow Crowned Night Heron) sits on a snag rising from the lake as it scratches an itch in the early dawn light in our lake in Southeast Missouri.

The name yellow crowned night heron is derived from the male who maintains the yellow colors on the crown, and their dark time feeding habits. Rarely are they seen during the day, as their coloration leaves them open to predators…at night they are safer. Since they are a small bird, eagles, hawks, and even the osprey will prey upon them not to mention owls. (Source – My Friend and Heron expert Pamela Phelps )
