Daylight's Yawn

Thirsty willow drapes its delicate leaves
Kookaburra laughs to an even beat
Calm river ripples in the twilight ease
Dry scrub crackles in the summer time heat

The silver ghost gums soar high overhead
Proud splendour veiled by a majestic height
A broken branch falls, crushing the bush bed
Vibrations echo with tremulous might

Startled possums hide, cockatoos take flight
Silence falls as the quivers slowly die
A lonely owl calls in the still dark night
Pale moonlight wanes as the hours tick by

Melancholy stars fade with daylight’s yawn
Raging red sky rises to morrow’s dawn
