i dont know what your technique is for applying the white watercolor but it is a wonderful effect. brushwork of sumi is nailing the lightplay on water effect. very nice.
thank you…there is a certain amount of oil in sumi so if you apply watery white on top it tends to float on the wet ink ….when both dry you get this translucent/opaque look on the paper!… washi of course is the fine base that allows you to achieve this…. will try your sandwich recipe soon :)
Thank you so much for this technical information. As you know I love sumi ink as well, although I have not used that aspect of it’s property and I did not realize that there is any oil in the ink. I thought it was made from burnt pine, but the pine does have the makings of turpentine in it. I was reading also about the health benefits of pine oil just now. hmmmm . . . . I appreciate the info Terry, I ‘ll let you know if my experiments yeild anything. :)) Do they have any Portillo’s in Japan? good beef sandwichs. :))
