Artist's Description

Located a short distance from Carlow town this magnificent Gothic style mansion which housed the once farmous Duckett family now lies in ruins. The mansion once stood on a 12,000 acre estate. The family claim descent from William the Conqueror and the house of De La Poer. Constructed in the early 19th century by the architect Thomas a Cobden the resulting castle was an awesome spectacle. Soaring towers, turrets, arches, niches and high-stacked chimneys were among its remarkable features. The grounds around the house were used as a training ground for the Irish Republican Army during the Irish war of Independance (1919-1921). The mansion was tragically destryed by a fire on the 20th of April 1933. The cause of the fire was never determined
