Artist's Description

Rear Admiral Grace Hopper superimposed over a bit of classic COBOL code. Grace Hopper is an authentic computer science Rock Star.

In the 1940s, Hopper found the first computer bug (which was an actual bug – a moth that got caught in a circuit relay). In the 1950s, she invented compiled programming languages, one of which was COBOL, and is still used today. She was on ‘60 Minutes’ and David Letterman.

Grace Hopper was one of the pioneers and leading architects of the modern computing era. Her energy and innovations have shaped the future of programming and inspired a generation to think critically about the cost of their “nanoseconds”.

Owing to the breadth of her accomplishments and her naval rank, the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Hopper (DDG-70) was named for her, as was the Cray XE6 “Hopper” supercomputer at NERSC.

She was brilliant and funny and had a beautiful vision of the future of computing.
