Strolling across the back lawn in South Lyon, Michigan, these two Sandhill Cranes contemplated, with each step, the safety of this area. Sandhill Cranes territory normally finds them from Alaska, across Canada into the Great Lakes region and south to Mississippi. This was my first glimpse and I found that despite their very long legs and neck that they were very graceful.
The Sandhill Crane does not breed until it is two to seven years old and can live up to the age of 20. Sandhill Cranes mate for life and normally they migrate in large flocks. They build their nests among the vegetation in bogs and marshlands allowing the nest to be floating.
