Battered

BATTERED

With his fists he hits you hard.
Blood sprays as you hit the floor.

What did you do this time to deserve his rage?
Curling up inside yourself, you begin to pray.

Yelling, he hits harder.
Bones crack from his thunder.

Oh God, what do you say?
What can you do, how can you get away?

Then as suddenly as it appeared,
his rage subsides and disappears.

The punches stop, the tears begin.
He is so sorry, this isn’t him.

How many times have you heard this line?
How many times have you been blind?

With tear filled eyes and a bloodied face,
you rise and begin to walk away.

Leaving him alone, sitting on the floor,
he cries out your name once more.

A sigh deep within your chest,
you do not hesitate in your step.

Reaching out for the door,
knowing you cannot endure this pain anymore.

Walking outside into the light,
you begin to pick up the pieces of your Battered life.
