Artist's Description

A pen and ink drawing of a sandstone gateway and steps, with overgrown foliage and a young oak tree. I found this lovely scene in front of a local ruined castle in Cheshire, England. The sketch was made using artists’ drawing pens on watercolour paper.

The drawing was a contender in the 8th Halton Open Art Competition in my home town. Unfortunately, it didn’t win a prize. I later ‘coloured it in’ with water colour and entered it for the Patchings Art Competition 2014, where it was awarded a ‘Highly Commended’.

The sad thing about this image is that, in the same way that David Hockney’s tree stump ‘Totem’ was vandalised after he painted it, the young oak tree in my drawing was also brutally chopped down in it’s prime, probably by my local council. I am in no way anywhere near as talented as DH, but I know how gutted he must have felt.
