Artist's Description

Closest to the present-day rural town of Namwera in the Mangochi District of Malawi is sub saharan Africa, lays the ruins of a place known as Fort Mangochi. It was built in the late 1800s by the British to help put an end to the slave trade. Mighty Yao chiefs ruled this area and thumbed their noses at the British. Surrounding this house is a wall which encompasses several acres. Outside of the fort one can find cooks and soldiers quarters, nearly within sight of Skull Rock. For a day hike, start in the town of Namwera and get a guide to take you to Fort Mangochi, or begin at Skull Rock Estates just off the road from the village of Majuni.
