Narrabeen Bluebottle

I am Portuguese Man o’ War
I am Physalia physalis
Member of siphonophores
Or Bluebottle (easier to say)
Long is my tentacle and it
Captures small fish and crustaceans

I am Physalia physalis
My marissa or air bladder
Is translucent and a bit blue
Sometimes purple or even mauve
Currents and tides and tides and winds
Blew me here to Narrabeen beach

I am Portuguese Man o’ War
A stinger and a predator
And I am stranded on this shore
Looking back at the Ocean blue
Wondering whether one big wave
Would come to me to my rescue

I am Physalia physalis
Could I go back to Ocean blue
Could I just live and sail away
I do wonder if I’ll ever
Submerge and float as I used to…
Or do I lie and wait to die

I am Portuguese Man o’ War
Can I rest here on the warm sand
Where I might sting innocent feet
Before I go into deep sleep
Well travelled I am after all
So Narrabeen here I’ll decay
