Artist's Description

GIMP photo manipulation and digital painting shading study. Inspired by memories of my college town’s lake.

I should have submitted this for entry into this cool mixed media phobia illustration challenge. Wasn’t thinking fast enough at the time.

You can see the water came from this photo I took during a flood:

The back ground uses the texture from my scan of my sketch paper:

The rest is freehand digital done in GIMP.

It’s a dead fish, and who isn’t afraid of death? But mostly what I can’t stand is nastiness, gross stuff, ickiness. Bloated corpses and nature rotting around me in a post-apocalyptic way. Thinking you’re in an idyllic scene, and finding that it’s anything but…it’s like room 237 in the Shining when he hugs that vixen, only to see her rotting in the mirror. My dream of my late dog running through a beautiful pasture with me and my daughter, and suddenly he is stuck in the putrescent remains of a large horse.. Or like me at my college town lake, trying to relax, and then looking down and seeing three dead fish…it was so quiet, no one was around, and it was one of the most disturbing things I’ve experienced.
