Artist's Description

This Merchants Mutual Insurance Company Building was designed by William Alfred Freret and built in 1859. It is located at 622 Canal Street in New Orleans, Louisiana.

One night while strolling down Canal Street, the sudden sight of this building glowing in the night struck me with profound awe. I spent weeks drawing this. It was also the last digital work that I ever executed using a mouse.

This rather exotic building is one of the two remaining cast-iron fronted structures in all of New Orleans. It features solomonic columns, bulls-eye windows, and a parapet that is decorated with symbols related to the company’s business: fire plug and hose, anchor, ship’s prow, spars, furled sails, cotton bales, barrels, pipe, and the roof of a house.

At a later date, I illustrated this building as it appears during the day
