Poison

The young man draws
his warm fuzzy
security blanket near
as he lifts a phallic symbol
of chimerical solace
to the desert which
his lips have become

He is a helpless man
consumed by the bitter anesthesia
sipped in continuous lethal doses
that temporarily hides
old battle scars
which still ignite fires
of fresh pain
he is slipping farther away

Shadows of uncertainty
haunt eyes that fear
gazing into a reflection of emptiness
so he indulges the cancerous tumors
which feed slowly upon his mind
languoring in the rage
of his stony desolate exile
as the years pass quickly
like tiny grains of sand
falling though a clouded hourglass
those grains have
become quicksand

He laughs hysterically
in a useless attempt
to conceal bitter tears
that fall upon
the weathered creased cheeks
of a man much older than his years
leaning heavily upon his well worn crutch
his wrinkled spotted hand
reaches unsteadily
for that false euphoria once more

Sighing deeply as he stares intently
into a reflection that does not lie
fresh tars form in eyes
that are now clear of uncertainty
for he sees through the hazy facade
of numbing tranquility for a moment
and realizes that the old man
in the mirror is him
his life has slipped away
