Artist's Description

The Iota was an Italian vessel bound for the West Indies with a cargo of Welsh coal. In December 1893, like many other vessels before and since, it was driven onto the North Cornish shore in a fierce gale. Nine of the eleven crew managed to make it to shore, and were rescued with great heroism by three Tintagel residents and a coastguard. Domenico Cantanese, the ship’s boy, was thrown into the water but despite valiant attempts to save him by another crewman, both were drowned, together with one other crewman.
