A painting depicting Ireland in days past.
Autumn in Ireland and the man is returning home with his cart of peat. This is an old painting I did several years ago, entirely from my imagination.
We still use peat (turf) in Ireland and love the smell wafting through the air during the long, cold winters.
Every year, at about this time, on country roads in County Clare, you will most likely slow down to a snail’s pace as you drive behind an ancient tractor (with an even more ancient driver… :-) ) loaded with peat.
When the load is brought to your home, be prepared for a few hours of hard, back-breaking work as the huge load of peat must be stacked neatly in a pile. Nothing beats cooking on the old range and the warmth spreads through the house and food tastes so much better.
The kitchen is the best place to be on a cold day!
