Artist's Description

Featured in Snow! Glorious Snow! group on December 14, 2008

Location: Hurley, WI

No, I didn’t take this one, but really love it and needed to share. My sister Mary took this photo of her daughter/my niece checking the mail after a monster storm (one of MANY that year). Yes, she is standing in the road!

Hurley is the official “Snow Capital of Wisconsin”, as designated by Governor Jim Doyle on March 26, 2009. “[Hurley is] Renowned for a record-breaking snowfall, often topping an average of 200 inches. Hurley is a paradise for the winter enthusiast, often holding the rights to the first snowfall in the state each year and the last to say goodbye to it in the spring.”

Iron County holds 4 out of 6 Wisconsin snow records, including most snow in a winter, 277 inches officially (some places got over 300 inches) in 1996-97, the year this photo was taken. Most storms that winter were measured in feet, not inches.

This winter wonderland (or nightmare) is the result of lake effect snows from Lake Superior. The storm clouds sweep across the Lake from the north picking up extra moisture from the open water and are ready to drop its load by the time it hits the southwest shore, of which Hurley is near.
