Artist's Description

Location: Green County Cheese Days, Monroe, WI

A display of old fashioned milk cans at an old-world cheese making demonstration. Milk was hauled in these type of cans from farm to dairy, back in the old days before milk trucks had tanks.

The Cheese Festival was started in 1914 and is the oldest food festival in the midwest, USA. It is held in September in even years and the majority of events take place around the city’s historic Courthouse Square and streets near by. In addition to cheese, it is also a celebration of beer (several great breweries in the area) and the Swiss heritage of the area. It is a weekend of eating, drinking, shopping, history, arts, sports, performance, exhibitions, demonstrations, music, dancing, antique cars and tractors, carnival rides, 2-1/2 hour parade, yodeling, polka church service, royalty, and cows. Many folks of Swiss heritage wear the native costume, or at least a t-shirt proudly proclaiming to be Swiss. The event attracts thousands. A great photo op, even if it is very crowded.

Come to Cheese Days in Monroe.
That’s the place for you to go.
Music, dancing, yodeling, too.
And a big parade for you.
And we know you will be pleased.
When you taste Green County Cheese.
Come to Cheese Days, come to Cheese Days,
Come to Cheese Days in Monroe!
