Artist's Description

Location: Chinese Culture Day; Wisconsin State Capitol, Madison WI

Cropped

The young lady in the middle (the very Western blonde) is a student at a Madison’s West High School and founder/owner of the Hua Mulan Dance Troupe, a Chinese dance company for children. She learned the art of Chinese dance at a very young age when she was a performer with the Peking Opera. Her students are small children, including pre-school age and many adoptees. All her instruction is in Chinese which, I’ve been told by those in the know, is perfect. I consider what she is doing to be very important, helping Chinese children retain their heritage, culture and language. The other two girls in the photo are her older students.

It was a difficult shoot. I had the wrong lens on my camera, couldn’t get a good spot to shoot without standing right in front of the staging area and the crowd was closely packed, so it was hard to isolate the shot. What I really wanted a nice shot of the teacher with her little students; I enjoyed watching her interact with them.
