Artist's Description

Location: Wisconsin Historical museum; Madison Wisconsin

Smart Studios was a recording studio located on East Washington Avenue in Madison founded in 1983 by Butch Vig and Steve Marker to produce local bands. The building became the focus of operations for Vig and Marker’s own group, the Grammy nominated band Garbage. Many bands of the 1980-90s recorded there- U2, Cheap Trick, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Killdozer, and_ Soul Asylum_. After Smart Studios closed on May 1, 2010, the State Historical Society acquired much of studio equipment for their archives by purchase and donation by Butch Vig and Steve Marker, including the hulking, 24-track recording console and Vig’s very first drum kit which eventually became the house drum set at the studio. (For those who don’t get the significance of that- it would be like getting Ringo Starr’s first set of drums.) The acquisitions were celebrated with an exhibit on Smart Studios and the Madison Grunge Scene.
