Cropped top and right side to accentuate the centrifugal lean.

A few years ago, I took my 4-H kids down town for our photography meeting and photo shoot. I had planned that we would walk a few blocks in the campus area and shoot around the lake and State Street. I had completely forgotten that it was Crazy Legs Saturday, so we quickly shifted the focus of our shoot. We positioned ourselves on a corner, which also happened to be the stake out for a photojournalist from one of the local papers. He took us under his wing and coached the kids a bit in between his work; how lucky was that?! I like this shot with a little centrifugal leaning as they approach the corner.

The Crazy Legs Run was hatched in 1981 over a couple of beers (imaging that!) as a way to raise money to support University of Wisconsin athletic programs. It is held the end of April; it starts at the Wisconsin State Capitol and ends with free beer at the 50 yard line inside Camp Randall, the University football stadium. It was named after then Athletic Director and former UW football star Elroy "Crazy Legs” Hirsch. He had an unusual style of running and was given the name “Crazy Legs” by a sports journalist who said that he ran like a “demented duck”. Hirsch played pro-football with the Los Angeles Rams in the late 1950s. While in L.A., he appeared in 3 movies, including “Crazylegs All American”, starring as himself.

2009 Crazy Legs Run had a record 18,541 runners and took place in a pouring, driving rain.
