Artist's Description

Location: Dane County Farmers’ Market; Capitol Square, Madison, WI

I pried my butt out of bed this past Saturday morning and went to the Farmers’ Market in search of hickory and black walnuts. I remembered to grab the camera as I headed out. It was a typical day for early May market- cold and rainy (it was trying to snow).

A Menonite family was selling produce and their tomatoes were beautiful, Memonites are Anabapist Christians originated in Switzerland, and from which the more conservative Amish split. Memonites follow many old ways, but are tolerant of modern conveniences; they may own cars and cell phones, and support higher education. They known historically as a peace church and community service is encouraged.

The DCFM is the largest producer-only farmers’ market in the U.S. The out-door market is held on Saturday, end of April to early November, on the walk around the State Capitol Square. Smaller markets are held at other locations on Wednesday and during the winter. The market started in 1972 and there are 150 vendors, with a 3 year waiting list. Official rules are that all products must be Wisconsin grown or made. The Saturday market has taken on a festival air: non-profit, political, and public information booths are located on the inside Capitol walkways, and arts and crafts vendors, street musicians and performers and concession stands have set up around the periphery.

If you are visiting Madison, this is a “don’t miss”. Be sure to bring the wallet… you can buy fresh fruits and veggies, homemade bakery, preserves, honey, maple syrup, pasta, pesto, cheese, eggs, meat products ranging from beef jerky to ostrich steaks), flowers, jewelry, paintings, stain glass, pottery and clothing. And of course, don’t forget the camera! Leave the dog at home; only service dogs are allowed. Unofficial rules are that you walk the market counter clockwise and no stopping in the middle to chat, or risk getting yelled at!
