I Tried to Write Some Verse Today

I tried to write some verse today
In Emily’s tradition,
But found it hard to find a thought
For this, my first edition.

It would indeed be favorable
To write as she with ease.
Then I’d a poet also be,
If only me to please.

I’d want to rhyme with clarity,
And meter I’d uphold,
If only she could guide my pen
And I could be so bold.

About affairs of heart she wrote
With delicate reflection.
I wish I could elucidate
With similar affection.

Perhaps my forte isn’t plain
A poetess to be;
Perhaps I’ll try another art
More suitable to me.

Artist's Description

The Emily in the poem is, of course, Emily Dickenson. I’ve always wondered where poets come up with the right words for their thoughts. The mechanics of rhyme and meter aren’t so hard, but the real art and soul of poetry eludes me.
