Growing Up

You never knew, when you were young,
That all of the simplicities, the Barbies, the games,
Were your childhood; your fun,
And that it would not be the same.

Best friends, popular music, truth or dares,
Slow Dancing, first kisses, and pinky swears.

When you were a young kid,
Secrets had little meaning,
Then, it was just what you wished you did,
Now, it is a bigger thing.

Sex, love, jealousy, hate,
Girlfriends, boyfriends, crying, fate,

You used to get so excited when your birthday candles were lit,
Then a song left no impression,
You did not used to have any one favorite,
And it was always your parent’s discretion.

Getting high, meeting people, swimming in the ocean,
Laughing, singing, eating, and drinking the magic potion.

You did not once stop to think,
Your tea set would one day hold hard liquor.
You never did notice the link,
But then again, you were so pure.

Condoms, pregnancy tests, perfect hair, nice smile,
Right words, enough guts, ready to walk that mile.

Back then you were playing with Barbie dolls and wearing Little Unicorns underwear,
Now you are picking out silk boxers and flower panties,
Of course, back then you did not care.
But now, you are picking out daycares and nannies.

Fist fights, daydreaming, bicycling, life,
Holding hands, death, telephones, strife.

You used to cry whenever someone was teasing,
And you would laugh to fit in,
Now you cry, because there is a reason.
And now you laugh, because you still can.

Being good enough, hanging with the cool crew,
You were not being good enough, because you were not being you.
