Ground Zero April 2010 – looking out of the Walkway from the Winter Garden leading through to the World Financial Center
New York City
… there are so many conflicting emotions when you visit this site – on one hand it’s a flurry of construction activity, workers and machinery – like any other building site…people busily going about their lives all around….but the underlying tragedy cannot be masked… there are pockets of people at any given vantage point just standing and staring….some for long long periods of time…some in complete silence…watching and remembering…trying to visualise…trying to match the indelibly saturated media images to where they are presently standing…. and you can’t… it’s unfathomable… you try.. but you can’t hear the screams.. smell the smoke.. feel the heat…see the pure hell that must have ensued…. for days, months and years… and like millions around the world… you walk away asking simply…. why?
…and then, upon leaving the site, feeling quite numb.. New York City has way of quickly devouring you, snapping you back into the here and now and tumbling you out into the frantic and frenized streets of this most brilliant and resiliant city!!!
