Artist's Description

This summerhouse in situated within the Bridge End complex of gardens in Saffron Walden, Essex, where seven interlinked gardens create today’s spectacle. Bridge End Garden is one of Essex’s hidden jewels. The gardens were originally laid out by Francis Gibson in the 1840’s, a member of the locally well-known Gibson family who were eminent quakers, bankers and brewers.

I had seen the summer house numerous times in the park but had always been open with people sitting in it, this time the doors were locked shut and made for a more imposing view.

These grade II listed gardens are now leased to the District Council and are open to the public each day free of charge.
Over the past two years an extensive restoration project, generously supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, has been undertaken to return this historic corner of Saffron Walden to its former glory so that they can once again be enjoyed by visitors of all ages.
