Artist's Description

Caught between Lakes Erie & Ontario, on a wintry day….

The intrepid photographer Ray risks life & limb to capture a shot of the Upper Rapids just above the Horseshoe (or Canadian) Fall. The location is the third of the Three Sisters Islands, a small archipelago that is part of Goat Island. The Three Sisters were named for the daughters of General Parkhurst Whitney, a War of 1812 general who visited the islands with Asenath, Angeline, & Celinda Eliza in 1816. Thereafter, the notion of The Three Sisters took root, replacing the former, more mundane names that included Deer Island. Goat Island & its smaller neighbors are part of the New York State park system, small, wild sanctuaries in the midst of industry & lingering urban decay. Niagara Falls, NY, does seem to be on an upturn; we’re all waiting with bated breath…. In the meantime, a good time was had by Us as we spent a weekend rediscovering the city of my birth & all its wonders (including me).
On the Canadian shore beyond can be seen one of the grand old Ontario Hydro buildings – no longer in use, waiting for some visionary to turn it into a restaurant or other attraction….

More on the Three Sisters Islands can be found here.
