Chautauqua Institution is located on Lake Chautauqua in Chautauqua County near Mayville, NY. Say that ten times fast. This fine building is just one of hundreds of elaborate Victorians that crowd the grounds of this cultural, educational & religious enclave whose season runs each year from the end of June to the end of August. The Seaver Gym was named in honor of Dr. Jay Webber Seaver (1855 – 1915), a physician, professor at Yale, & pioneer in anthropometry, the study of the science of human measurement as it relates to physical education. The gymnasium was built in 1890, at which time Seaver was pursuing his study of anthropometry by measuring innumerable individuals at Chautauqua. The building originally housed a gymnastics school, & according to the Chautauqua Institution website, it ‘was one of the first gyms to install a basketball court when that sport was invented over 100 years ago.’ It is part of the Boys’ and Girls’ Club at Chautauqua.
