This photograph – scanned from the popular carte de visite (small albumen print mounted on cardboard) of the day – is of my great grandfather James Elson, age 17, shortly after the well-known American Civil War Battle of Gettysburg (Pennsylvania), which took place in very early July, 1863. He had lied about his age to enlist, & by this time, he had already been serving for two years. He was wounded in the leg at Gettysburg, but had refused to let the surgeons amputate. This photograph was probably taken during or after his convalescence. More about him & his regiment can be found here .
