Artist's Description

Well, ladies & gentlemen, for my next number I’d like to sing ‘Tennessee Waltz’, dedicated to all & sundry. Here I am in my red velvet, primed for something, which was not unusual in those days. This was taken in September of 1950, just before my third birthday. It was around this time that I made my first recording in a little booth in the back of a Walgreen’s drugstore. I was aided & abetted by my aunt Susie, my father’s sister, who prompted me & can be heard to say things like ‘Now the “Tennessee Waltz”….’ I also sang ’I’m Looking Over A Four-Leaf Clover’, ‘Here Comes Peter Cottontail’, a lullaby my mother used to sing to me that I called ’Baby’s Boats’ (it starts out ’Baby’s boat’s a silver moon…‘), & a Goodyear commercial that was running on the radio at the time (I can still sing every commercial in history). And, she said immodestly (shameless self-promotion), I could sing then, & I can sing now! In this photo I am sitting in ’the comfy chair’ ~ all homes have one chair that should be jettisoned but which is just such a comfortable institution that, well, it endures. Shall I make this one into my avatar? Voting on this will commence at any moment.
