If Motif #1 in Rockport (just down the road) is the most painted, & now photographed, building in Massachusetts, this elderly house near Essex must be next in line. It is the historic Burnham house, & it is well represented in any number of places online. Located on a tidal marsh just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic, this structure has weathered much! Essex (originally Chebacco) was the preeminent builder of boats, including the famous Gloucester fishing schooners, in the region for centuries, & the Burnhams were among the preeminent shipwrights. In fact, there are still Burnhams building boats there.
