7 June 1939
Seen here are four lovely American ladies (mostly) (Mostly lovely? Mostly American? Mostly ladies? Read on….) who have crossed the mighty Niagara from Lewiston, NY, to Queenston, Ontario, to await the arrival of Their Royal Majesties King George VI & Queen Elizabeth. The Royals were on an extended tour of North America, & had been visiting Niagara-On-The-Lake at the northern end of the Strait of Niagara (aka The River) before making their way in an open car to Niagara Falls, Ontario. The dignified (or not) subjects in this photograph have positioned themselves at a point just about opposite their various homes on the river in Lewiston. They are my grandaunt Mary Belle [Charlton] Hobbie (1876 – 1963: she was actually born in Canada, but by this time was definitely in the ‘mostly American’ category); Blanche Morgan (great friend, terrific lady, River Road neighbor in Lewiston); my maternal grandmother Mabel [Hobbie] Elson (1878 – 1965); my aunt (Mom’s sister) Susan [Elson] Blood (1905 – 2002), tending to her knitting or something. My mother was around somewhere, along with two or three others. I’m not sure who took the photograph. The interesting wall that serves as a backdrop is still there, still surrounding the two big river-facing houses it has protected for decades. The lady inhabitant of one of those houses was very pleasant & accommodating. She treated her ‘guests’ to tea (& allowed them to use the bathroom if they wished…), & it was a fine day out & a splendid occasion. The King & Queen did at last pass by with their entourage; they waved to all & sundry, then proceeded on to Niagara Falls where they dedicated several things in need of dedicatory remarks, & continued on their way west.
More about this tour can be seen here.
