Artist's Description

New Year’s Day, 2013. A little snow in the background, a couple of avian opportunists closer up. In the window feeder is an infrequent winter visitor, the Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus), & waiting his turn (he wouldn’t be likely to tangle with the feisty wren) is a Tufted Titmouse (Parus bicolor). Carolina Wrens have been making their way northward for several years now; still not oft-seen, but a few years ago, we never saw them, & a sighting like this would have been cause for phone calls & other excitement. We are more likely to see the tiny Winter Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes), but he, too, is uncommon. The House Wren (Troglodytes aedon), however, is a constant presence, a little balloon of big, bubbling song, from his arrival in early May until the end of nesting season, usually through July. The titmouse & his ilk live & thrive here all year long.
