Danish History
stylized figurative acrylic painting on canvas
size of original work 91cm x 120.2cm (36"X48")

Due to new laws proposed by Christian II to give citizens more rights the nobles rose against him. Even though he had a large part of the country behind him, inhabitants of many towns, and the rural population, he suddenly lost heart.

The story goes that he had himself rowed back and forth across the sea at night, time and time again, without being able to make up his mind whether to stay and fight or return to Copenhagen. He chose the latter course and one evening sailed from Denmark to Holland with his wife Elizabeth and their children.

A new king was proclaimed, and King Christian’s laws were burnt by the executioner as being harmful to the nobility. Christian II died in 1559 at the age of 78 years.
