President Johnson’s Family homesteaded several thousand acres of this land in the 1800’s, near Stonewall, Texas. The original shotgun house is shown in the background. Most of the profit from this ranch was from free ranging longhorn cattle. I wanted to show the windmill and its storage tank because without these two items homesteads like this would not have existed in Texas. Meat was smoked and dried in the building to the left. Although Texas rain can at times be sparse, 80 to 150 ft down in the rock and soil are some of the largest aquifers in the world. This is an unretouched photograph.
