Artist's Description

This image was done as part of SOJIE 13
Artists were asked to translate a digital image from a preselected set to their own media. I based this digital image on

it’s me…sometimes…
by sure2010
.

I was attracted to it for two reasons, first the visual impact – it has no specific details but to me it said glass and what we see through it. Suresh says he had no preconceived intention of creating a self portrait, but it does seem to suggest a portrait to me. I love glass in all its beautiful forms in real life, and I love exploring the visual effects associated with it in computer graphics renders. I was intrigued to explore how a human head will look.
The second reason is the thoughts and issues raised by Suresh in his description, namely self expression (or lack of) and how it is perceived by the world around us. In his image the main effect is a blurred, not well defined person although perhaps the vivid colors may suggest there is more to him than meets the eye.
In my image all the attributes of glass came into play. It introduced some blurring due to the partial transparencies, distortions via refraction, repetition and echos via reflections, and an injection of color via dispersion/caustics.
All of these contributed to the aesthetic appearance of the image but they also have an important symbolic meaning…
She seem to be protected by a sheet of glass, maybe a window? maybe an internal wall she built to protect herself? Is she submerged in water in an isolation tank?
But what are the consequences? As seen by an outsider her image is distorted – look at her mouth, can you trust what she says? look at her eyes – are they open wide in interest or closing, ignoring? and what about all the ‘additional eyes’ – how watchful and critical is she?
But, on the other hand, look at all the shards of rainbow on her…surely a promise of internal beauty …
The image was created using Poser 7 and Vue 7.4.
With Suresh’s permission I made two versions, one blue and one green. As he decided he prefers the blue, this is the one I submit to Sojie13.
