A scene from my memory of a typical gravel pit in the sixties with the ubiquitous Thames Traders in evidence, the 14 ton gross four wheeler in the foreground was more common and just about up to the job with its 5.4 litre diesel with a payload of about ten tons. The six-wheeler loading in the background at 20 ton gross shared the same engine but at least had a low, medium and high range gearbox to help it on its way but the same vacumn-servo brakes to stop it. Loaded with 14 ton of sand or gravel the hapless driver lived on the edge piloting this beast, I should know,because I had the dubious pleasure of driving it for three years.
