King Louis IX, builder of Sainte Chapelle
Louis decided to replace the royal Chapel of St. Nicholas with a new chapel more fittingly designed for the treasures it enshrined. The Sainte Chapelle is the greatest architectural achievement of Louis’s reign, and one of the lasting glories of French art.
All this religious ceremony satisfied one of the deepest needs of Louis’ nature.
