Artist's Description

*It’s not guitar with lightning riffs
Nor flick with glowing orb
This heavy metal’s full of ‘ifs’
About what we absorb

This heavy metal’s in the air
In water and the soil
Existing almost everywhere
In world that’s based on oil

It’s even in the food we eat
Within the clothes we wear
In front of us, yet so discrete
We’re mostly unaware

They’re merely basic elements
Of nature’s building blocks
Until we change the blocks percents
Open Pandora’s box

And when we get our wake up call
About mistakes we’ve made
Too late it will be to recall
All things it now invades*

This fractal artwork was inspired by the huge increase in elemental heavy metals being introduced into our environment by our industrial society. A heavy metal is any of a number of higher atomic weight elements, which has the properties of a metallic substance at room temperature. While some of these elements are actually necessary for humans in minute amounts (Iron, Cobalt, Copper, Manganese, Molybdenum, and Zinc), others are highly carcinogenic or toxic, affecting, among others, the central nervous system (Mercury, Lead, Arsenic), the kidneys or liver (Mercury, Lead, Cadmium, Copper) or skin, bones or teeth (Nickel, Cadmium, Copper, Chromium).

These high concentrations of heavy metals make their way into our air, our water, our soil, and our food chain from the processes used to create the industrialized society we live in. We are, in essence, destroying both ourselves and our environment in the pursuit of what we deem as progress. Everything in nature is interconnected, and our abuses to nature will come back to us one hundred fold… or more likely one million fold.

The original is 4800 × 4800 pixels at 300 pixels per inch. The fractal was created in Incendia. I created the Incendia dmap (diffraction map) in Photoshop. The borders were also created in Photoshop. I have included a few detail cutaways below so you can see the detail. The detail cutaways are at 50% of the original size of the artwork.
