Artist's Description

*Microchips on circuit boards
Solder jewels adorn
Through network of infinite cords
A consciousness is born

With only logic as it’s guide
Assured it’s reasoning sound
We give it freedom to decide
On matters that it’s found

We think not what that implicates
Relinquish our control
To mind that may decide our fate
A mind without a soul

And when we get our wake up call
About mistake we’ve made
Too late it will be to recall
All things it now invades*

This fractal artwork was inspired by the concept of artificial intelligence, also known as AI. I was first introduced to the concept of artificial intelligence in 1970 by a sci-fi movie called ‘Colossus: The Forbin Project’. The movie was based upon the 1966 novel ‘Colossus’, by Dennis Feltham Jones, about a massive, eponymous American defense computers becoming sentient and deciding to assume control of the world. The concept behind the book was brilliant in vision, as this was written a decade before the first PC and Apple computers were created. There have been many spin-offs created from this movie over time, such as, ‘2001:A Space Oddessy’, ‘The Matrix’, and ‘The Terminator’ to name just a few. I have heard that Ron Howard is currently in a development phase for a remake of ‘Colossus’ as I write this. You can read more about the original novel/movie at the Wiki link I have provided below.

Colossus: The Forbin Project

Artificial intelligence is a concept where machines are endowed with the ability to reason through complex programming (logic), and thus eventually become self-aware. I have never been a proponent of artificial intelligence, and I have been a programmer for over thirty years now. I detest machines that are given a voice, like cars that like to annoy you by reminding you of what you didn’t forget in the first place. I think anything that has a voice should be required to have a personality as well. Anyway… back to the point of the artwork.

The biggest problem with artificial intelligence is that the reasoning ability is derived solely from logic alone, and does not include the important human attributes of emotion and sensation, which are just as important to sound reasoning as logic. Reasoning with logic alone is dangerous at best, as with logic alone machines would all eventually arrive at the same conclusion… and that is that humankind is akin to a parasitic virus to the health of the planet, and all life on the planet, and therefore needs to be eradicated as the most logical protective measure against humankind. We should take great heed in the lessons that all of these works of fiction have been trying to teach us, especially now as we near the dawn of real artificial intelligence. We may not be that far away from these science fiction works becoming science realty nightmares.

The original is 3600 × 3600 pixels at 300 pixels per inch. The fractal was created in Incendia. I created the Incendia dmap (height field) for the solder effect in Photoshop. The background pattern and borders were also created in Photoshop. The electrical arcs from the circuit board to the fractal were drawn by hand in PSP, as I find it easier to draw with PSP. I have included a few detail cutaways below so you can see the detail. The detail cutaways are at 100% of the original size of the artwork.
