I’m a sculptor and a graphic designer. My graphic designs resemble subway maps. Perhaps they’re a bit too familiar to the urban dweller, but I’ve always been fascinated by them. The way that they distill complexity down to a simple bold geometry is mesmerizing. I try to tell a story through each map, one that isn’t immediately obvious at first glance. There’s an element of surprise in my pieces that I hope makes viewers laugh (or cry – I’ll take either) when they realize they aren’t just looking at a subway map.

My sculptures have a gestural quality to them, a testament to my foundation in two-dimensional mediums like charcoal and pastel (when my work was described as “sculptural”). I enjoy working in wood, plaster, metal, and mixed media. In my choice of materials and subject matter, I strive for a story (about my life or others’) that is universal.

Rajiv Raman received his BA in Visual Arts from Brown University. Previous show venues include the SCATV Gallery in Somerville, MA; Emmanuel College’s “Gallery 5” in Boston, MA; the “Stone and Plank Gallery” in Smithfield, RI; and “Harmony Studios” in Winston-Salem, NC. Rajiv lives in Somerville, MA with his wife, Anupama.
