Artist's Description

Fixing things is fun. It holds added interest when the thing you’re fixing is fundamental to life.. and survival depends on getting it right..

This self-portrait represents my own ‘Apollo 13’ moment..

..A ‘what if’ scenario.

(It may also serve as a metaphor: reflecting on personal change, or environmental concern..)

The happy outcome, for the patient, is that this operation was a success!

Acknowledgements to NASA, and to Ron Howard – inspiring Director! Thanks for training and technical advice to John Jenkins; and my particular thanks to the crew and staff of OM ship Logos Hope, without whose help this mission surely would not have been possible!

To all on RedBubble too, especially Kenny Irwin, thanks for your example, encouraging me to venture into space – this space for the imagination.

Technical info: I used Serif 9 software upon (mostly) my own original photos, taken with Sony Cybershot DSC-S730, plus 2 public domain images.. it’s my first such composite picture, experimenting with the possibilities.

Background: I am a long-term enthusiast of space-travel and science-fiction.

All the following is true:
I actually did travel in a vehicle compartment, shown here, at some height above the surface of the Earth.
I physically dismantled some equipment, accessed the wiring you see me holding up, then virtually remade these control panels – reconfigured and assembled (discarding some bits_).
Items were put to alternative uses – just as in Apollo 13
020920.html, I improvised from what I had to hand ;-)

The Earth and Moon (and my face) are pretty much as I found them. Everything else has been tinkered with. The white spacewear, I found online and modified to suit.. :-)
