Artist's Description

At this point, the river is hundreds of yards (or meters) across. And the stick you see is very near the bank – perhaps less than two yards or two meters from the bank. And I had some shots that showed that rather well, but when I got down to the level of the water, trying to capture the entire reflected scene as well as possible, something unexpected happened. This almost looks like the stick goes way out into the river, when in fact, it is just there, at the edge. And thus, because of the perspective, reality wavers and is lost, and our perception takes control.

Note the black spots on the right side of the photo. They are a type of ‘water spider’ that skits around on the surface of the water. These are not really spiders, they are also known as water striders or water skippers.
