Listen to the Wind

She told us there was more than to be expected
Coming and that we
Valuing courage
Should move directly along
Lest fate should tempt our vulnerable virtue

The way was rocky
And we hastened shortly as directed
Along its hardening twisted spine
Dark gathering behind

Yet if words were not all or nothing
And the journey less than almost complete
Perhaps a shelter then and there may have been sought
Dug out and covering us unfouled and hidden

Instead we took to the hills
Fearing less time, rather it being tricked and overridden
And thus our flesh was hauled across those ridges
Precarious as the whisper of danger itself

Its breath befouled us before the rest
Racing fault lines and
Teasing our gait
As if its consideration was overrated, wasted even
As an inconvenient and laughable defence

And so it was
As day’s gold threw shards across that space
That we were revealed by a lark ragged
Splayed out in our utter devastation and ruin

Listen to the Wind
