The Deal

I met a withered desert man
Who asked me for my hardened soul

Of course
I thought
What luck so soon
To rid me of my beast

He heaved the hefty struggling thing
Dazzled desert eyes
Across his crusty callused back
And strapped it firm and tight

He grinned farewell
That desert man
An act that looked like pain

And vanished into balls of dust
Leadened by his catch

That man seemed good
And strangely calm
On heading out to pasture
Wile I felt new
Alive and well
With coinage from my master
