Outer outer Space

I bought a new heater yesterday
To keep me warm
To turn cold away
To remind me
That love is like burnt toast
First soft, then crusty and finally scarred and smoking

I saw an old woman yesterday
She shivered
With recognition
When a rat the size of a dog
Stole a rattle from her pram

So I thanked the angels
When the witchetty grub,
Cream and plump,
Softly curled up in my lounge room
To read a dusk scented book
And giggled

It reminding me of toast and madness
And that the right amount of butter and honey
Makes for a mighty fine meal,
Attracts bees
And sends a seeding life
Rich and mysterious
Into outer, outer space

Outer outer Space
